“পৃথিবীর দান গ্রহণ করবার সময় লোভ বেড়ে উঠল মানুষের। অরণ্যের হাত থেকে কৃষিক্ষেত্র জয় করে নিলে, অবশেষে কৃষিক্ষেত্রের একাধিপত্য অরণ্যকে হঠিয়ে দিতে লাগল। নানা প্রয়োজনে গাছ কেটে কেটে পৃথিবীর ছায়াবস্ত্র হরণ করে তাকে দিতে লাগল নগ্ন করে। তাতে তার বাতাসকে করতে লাগল উত্তপ্ত, মাটি উর্বরতার ভাণ্ডার দিতে লাগল নিঃস্ব করে।

এই কথা মনে রেখে আমরা যে অনুষ্ঠান করেছিলুম সে হচ্ছে বৃক্ষরোপণ, অপব্যয়ী সন্তান-কর্তৃক লুণ্ঠিত মাতৃভাণ্ডার পূরণ করবার কল্যাণ-উৎসব।”

“When receiving the bounty of the earth, its cornucopia, Mankind became increasingly greedy, avaricious. From the great forests and woodlands, humans wrested control of the trees and monopolized their territory with excessive use of agriculture, till finally, the forests retreated in terror. The continuous cutting down of trees for various forms of human consumption stripped the earth of its clothing of shade trees. They caused the air above ground to become increasingly warmer, and pushed the natural fertility of the soil to its limit.

Keeping this in mind, the event we celebrate is the Tree Planting Festival. It is a festival of peace, renewal and blessing to restore and replenish the treasure repository of Mother Earth, that has been plundered by short-sightedness of her wasteful sons.”
